Sometimes you don’t need a complicated itinerary.
You need the beach, a good cup of coffee, seafood, and somewhere comfortable to sleep if you decide one day just isn’t enough.
That’s pretty much how I feel about Port Aransas.
If you’re looking for an easy day trip to Port Aransas, especially from San Antonio, Austin, or elsewhere in Central Texas, you can absolutely go down for the day. But if you have the time, I’d seriously consider staying overnight. We did, and it turned a quick coastal getaway into an actual break.
Here’s how we spent our Port Aransas trip, including a couple of places I’d happily go back to.
First Stop: Coffee Waves
Coffee before anything else. Obviously.
We stopped at Coffee Waves Port Aransas, which has become one of those places I associate with being in Port A.
And yes, we went more than once.
I love having a local coffee stop when we travel rather than automatically looking for a giant chain. Coffee Waves has enough choices that both of us can find something we want, and it feels like part of the trip rather than just a caffeine run.
One thing I particularly like about it: you can actually sit for a while. Port Aransas is supposed to be slower. I don’t need every vacation morning to start with me racing out the door.
Minnie Trips tip: If you’re doing Port Aransas as a day trip, I’d make this one of your first stops before heading toward the beach.
Then Just Enjoy Port Aransas
This is where I resist the urge to give you a 14-stop itinerary.
You don’t need one.
Part of the appeal of Port Aransas is simply being near the water, driving around, stopping when something catches your eye, and not having every 30 minutes accounted for.
You can spend a big chunk of the day at the beach, wander around town, look at the boats and water, shop a little, eat something good and call that a perfectly successful trip.
That is particularly nice for an adult getaway. There doesn’t always need to be an attraction waiting for you at 2:15.
Lunch or Dinner at Seafood & Spaghetti Works
We also ate at Seafood & Spaghetti Works.
This is one of those wonderfully old-school Port Aransas combinations: seafood and Italian food.
We clearly leaned toward the seafood side.
And the food photographs tell you pretty much everything you need to know. There were crab cakes, rice, seafood dip, fried seafood and enough food on the table that nobody was leaving hungry.
I also like places like this on a beach trip because not everyone in the group has to want the exact same thing. If one person wants seafood and somebody else wants pasta, this solves the argument.
Where We Stayed: Hampton Inn & Suites Port Aransas
We stayed at Hampton Inn & Suites Port Aransas.
For this kind of trip, that worked well for us. I wasn’t looking for a resort where the hotel itself was the vacation. I wanted someplace comfortable and convenient where we could come back after being out all day.
And this is where I’d make the distinction between a Port Aransas day trip and a one-night Port Aransas getaway.
You certainly don’t have to stay overnight.
But you also don’t have to drive down, squeeze everything into a few hours, and then make the entire drive home when you’re tired and sandy.
Sometimes paying for the hotel room is the upgrade that actually makes the trip better.
If I Were Planning a Port Aransas Day Trip
Morning: Drive in and stop at Coffee Waves.
Late morning/early afternoon: Beach time, sightseeing and wandering around Port Aransas.
Lunch or dinner: Seafood & Spaghetti Works or another local restaurant you’ve been wanting to try.
Afternoon: More beach, shops, marina/waterfront or absolutely nothing productive.
Before leaving: One more coffee wouldn’t be unreasonable.
And if at any point you’re thinking, I really don’t feel like driving all the way home tonight?
That’s when I’d make it an overnight trip.
Is Port Aransas Worth a Day Trip?
For me, yes.
Port Aransas works particularly well when you want a trip that doesn’t require a spreadsheet.
You can make an itinerary and pack the day with activities if that’s your style. But you can also come down, drink good coffee, eat seafood, see the Gulf and spend several hours doing remarkably little.
I think there’s room in travel for both kinds of days.
